He was big into Stax/Motown stuff, seem to remember his photo is on the Glory Boys album? He was more suedehead than mod around then.

Originally they were a punk band, with no discernible left or right wing content in their lyrics. Just the usual stuff of the time. They did a couple of singles, then a mini album where they’d changed their look to skinhead, but with no change in the music/lyrics. That band split up. Then a year or so later the singer put together a new band but using the old name, and that version is the band that was involved with the NF.

That's right, Sparrer were part punk, part Oi! with a dash of glam rock thrown in.

Good lads from East Ham IIRC

Bromley.

I’d forgotten about Cock Sparrer. Let the side down a bit, considering this is a WH site. The photo that came with the 12” they looked a mixed bag, if memory serves. Part skinhead, part bootboy, part punk?

mim. The clip you’re thinking of is from a documentary called Rough Cut and Ready Dubbed. If that’ll help in looking for it.

Paulon... didn't he have a dabble in the mod revival late 70's? Glory Boys Secret Affair and all that ??

paulon 6:01 Tue Oct 18
Re: Skinhead moonstomp
'Hoxton' Tom McCourt of Barney and the Rubbles and later the 4-Skins was one of the original revivalists, one of the few who stayed true to the original skinhead style in the mid to late 70's.

That's true I'd say. I like the Rejects, they always had aspirations to be a decent rock band, they didn't want to confine themselves to banging out gumby identi-kit Oi! dirges that a lot of their contempories did

Looking at most photos of the Rejects from the old days they don't really fit the skinhead look either.

Actually some footage somewhere on youtube of a load of skins from back then slating them for having long hair, fucked if I can find it though.

Aren't skrewdriver just a bunch of neo Nazi scum cunts?

Bromley Reject 4:46 Tue Oct 18
Re: Skinhead moonstomp
Skrewdriver were a scruffy punk band who re-invented themselves as skinheads around 1978. Some might say cynically.

Cock Sparrer wore all the gear (sta prest, button-down shirts, DMs) but didn't have the crops to go with it.

I can't remember any other bands around at the time who made such an effort to court the skinhead movement as Skrewdriver

Okay. Just wondered, as that’s where I was living for a while. I thought our paths might have crossed. But I would have been back living in London by the time you were visiting.

To do with the chronology of the documentary. Weren’t the punk, pre-NF version of Skrewdriver the first band to start dressing Skinhead style again? There were skinheads around other punk bands, Sham, Menace etc, but no bands that dressed like it, prior to Skrewdriver ditching the punk look. Maybe I’m forgetting someone, but I don’t think so?

Re: Skinhead moonstomp
A typically good Don Letts production but I thought it strange that the old "original" skinheads at the end were dressed more like the early 1980's incarnation. The old girl wearing ankle socks over tights for one - I never saw this look late sixties, early seventies.

There's a few Mods round my way that ride their scooters past our house every weekend. They're all in their early-mid sixties but dress more like '79 revival mods, badly done and look very odd....and old.
